What is aquaponics?
Aquaponics is an electrical replacement for a green thumb. No longer does growing plants have to be a difficult thing where you don’t even know how to approach it, with aquaponics all of the guesswork is replaced with easy to follow steps and processes.
How does it benefit me?
Because it’s a water base form of farming and nutrients diffuse in to the water column readily it makes it even easier to handle the processes required for farming.
Is aquaponic food healthier?
Have you ever tried to find credible information on how to start an aquaponic farm? If so, you already know how difficult it is with all the conflicting information out there and whats even more frustrating is the fact that very little of the information is relevant to you or your local situation.
Aquaponics is a process not a journey, and knowing the process guarantees you achieve long term success.
What skills do I need to do aquaponics?
Many people are posting online videos of their trial and errors that you can follow or you can even pay for courses teaching all about aquaponics. I have previously written about6 lessons i learned from maintaining an aquaponic system for over a decade But there are a few things you should know before you fork out cash or start building an aquaponics farm on an impulise.
This knowledge will ensure that you avoid problems with the steep learning curve. We will tell you what you need to know and then help you create a good, relevant plan that will ensure you successfully use aquaponics to achieve the goals you set out.
If you’re looking for an aquaponics system that works flawlessly and meets your expectations, the best method to ensure you end up with such a system growing food effortlessly is by looking at the 4 main components and how they interact with each other:
We don’t farm at home anymore because city space became more expensive than plants and animals can profit.
How does aquaponics work?
Any good independant aquaponic system should let you grow food without the need for store bought chemicals. This is important because these things will not be avaible when $hit hits the fan (SHTF).
One sure fire way to produce food after SHTF, is to ensure you know how to do so before the SHTF while it is still easy to learn. You should end up with a system that integrates with your homesteads daily actions readily.
Make sure your aquaponic system lets you compost your food scraps and crop waste turning turn them directly into inputs in the quickest way possible.
If it doesn’t have an inline composter, you will be throwing away good energy inputs while at the same time you’ll be loseing out on a valuable resource and have to be sourcing higher levels of inputs for your system in times of limited resources. We don’t know what the future of aquaponics may bring so we use it as a fail safe to make sure we are feed.
What tools and equipment do I need?
Aquaponics is a combination of natural processes
Aquaponics mimics natural food production and should therefore use decomposing as one of the processes involved, this is what current aquaponic systems are missing.
There are other important ideas contained on this website in what we call second generation aquaponics that we have discovered while adapting aquaponics for more modern homestead uses that we are going to share with you. And we have been talking about in our 8 times we killed it in the media spotlight
In the past the homestead provided food for the family, though time this was replaced by a global machine with the supermarket as the front. Aquaponics is disruptive because it replaces that global machine and puts the power in your hand.
Aquaponics is used in schools mostly as a tool to learn about Mother Nature’s natural processes involved in food production.
While not necessary, some great bonus features of a great aquaponic system are integrated rainwater harvesting , automatic fish feeders and a inline food scrap composer.
Now that you know what you want from aquaponics, you’re ready to start makeing your plan without worrying about over extending yourself and burning through cash.
