Science works so you dont have to
Lab conditions vs. Real life
There are numerous scientific papers on aquaponics hydroponics and aquaculture out there if you try to use them as your start point you will end up with a system that works perfectly under lab conditions and may or may not work in real world conditions. This is because scientific research is done on one topic in isolation This is ment as a guide not as real world application.
Our system has been designed How building an aquaponic system on a isolated island changed the world with all these concepts i am about to explain in place but if you must build your own system here is a general guide on how to go about it. I want to help the industry as a whole by helping you become successful.
Build based on what’s available
Despite all of the science out there you only realy have IBC’s bluedrums and 4in pvc pipe to work with on a hobby scale and if your going to custom build then here is a template for you.
Once you have read my previous articles and you have a framework now you can start to think about system hardware to ensure you don’t get over abducted in this process as most do and ultimately get turned off.Gardening without toxit chemicals at home
Wisdom of aquaponics
This post will tell you what you need to know to make sure you select the relevant science to build your system that will let you be successful
Freeing up only the joyfully task for you to do.
If you’re looking for a independent aquaponic system that works for you instead of you working for it , the best method to ensure you end up with something that lets you have a social life and you dont spend lots of time working on your garden but you still get the benifits you need is by looking to implement these things:
Decoupled is better
you will have more difficulties trying to balance both fish habitat and root zone than when they are separate it would be better for maintenance here are the reasons that it is more ideal
plants transpire water so you will have to top up with water regardless. you can either top up both systems or just the fish side. this top up water can come from the plant side if need be. some times there is extra when the rain has fallen.
only fish require constant water moving so it would be more efficient to use wicking beds for plants over DWC that require energy usage especially at night witch can increase the usage of batteries power. It is very important to know how to select the best possible pump in your system.
Good filtration means have to dump some of the concentrated water with the solids. put that in with plants and add new water to the fish. only going fully circulation when you need to drop the dissolved manure.
because of your offline mineralization.
Automation is good
Automated water quality testers While not necessary, are nice to have however reliance on these should be discourage i think that in mother nature the handeling of these things are natural and no one takes care of it because it is balanced and if you balance your system using science and the right hardware you will have very little to do.
Hardware design is based on science but what is important is that aquaponics is like cooking in that you can start small and add until you have the right amount.
